In the modern world, plastic has been the most used product. Due to easy and low manufacturing cost, the growth of plastic use increased. They took over many traditional products as glass, wood, stone, metal and leather.
World’s first synthetic plastic was Bakelite invented in 1907, by a Belgian chemist named Leo Hendrik Baekeland. Bakelite was made of phenol and formaldehyde. For the invention of Bakelite, he has been known as “The Father of the Plastics Industry”.
The growth of plastic usage increased to double back in the early 20th century. Due to its low disposal rate, it led to an environmental issue, to which chemist came up with plastic recycling. But not all plastic products can be recycled.
Single-used plastic is thrown away after one-time use, and it can be used once. These items are things like plastic bags, bottles, food packaging. Plastic based on petroleum is not biodegradable. Every year approximately 300 million tons of plastics are being produced, of which less than 15% are recycled.
Studies shows that some toxic chemicals are found in our bloodstream, which is released from breaking down of plastics in the water bodies. These toxic chemicals may cause cancer, impaired immunity, birth defects, infertility.
Ban of Single-used plastic was lead by Antigua and Barbuda in 2016 and till date its total of 14 countries to ban Single-used plastic. Because of their environmental impact, government around the world cracking down the sale and use. So, far more than 112 countries to reduce plastic use.
Plastic is a serious danger to the environment. It is essential to ban or reduce the use of plastic. We can start using traditional products over plastics, like paper or cloth bag instead of a plastic bag, glass bottles over plastic bottles.
